Plant transplant

Actively move in growth. New shoots and buds appear, the plant needs to provide the most comfortable conditions for growth and flowering. Therefore, most indoor plants are transplanted in the spring.

Depending on the type of plant, a transplant is necessary every year or every few years.

Why plant transplantation?

Sooner or later, the land in which your plant grows is depleted, the earthen lump is oxidized, and the plant cannot receive the required amount of minerals and trace elements. The roots may grow too much and there is little space for the plant. In addition, transplantation provides the soil with additional aeration, thereby improving oxygen access to the root system.

When to transplant plants?

As soon as the plant starts growing after winter, it's time to transplant it. If the plant blooms in early spring - it is necessary to wait for the end of flowering, so as not to damage future young shoots.

Bulbous (tulips, crocuses) are transplanted immediately after flowering.

Fast-growing plants (chlorophytum, asparagus, tradescantia) calmly tolerate transplants in summer and autumn.

Also, plants must be transplanted immediately after purchase - from a transport container to a permanent pot with a specially selected substrate.

How often do plants need replanting?

Young plants that grow quickly and actively need replanting every year. Mature plants, whose growth is slowed down, it is enough to transplant every 2-3 years.

Large palm trees (monstera, etc.) in tubs can be transplanted even less frequently. By the way, it is better to entrust the transplantation of large-sized plants to professional phytodesigners, especially if there are several such plants.

Plant Transplant Types

Complete transplant - when replacing the entire substrate completely, cleaning the roots of the remnants of the old

Incomplete - when part of the old soil remains on the roots of the plant

Replacing the top layer of the earth - carefully remove the top layer of the earth, replacing it with a new, fertile one. In this case, the plant remains in the old pot.

Transshipment is the least traumatic type of transplant. When the plant, together with the old soil, is moved to a larger pot. It is used in cases where the plant is simply small pot. This type of transplant can be carried out at any time of the year as necessary.

Choosing a New Plant Pot

In order to create the most favorable conditions for further plant growth, it is important to choose the right pot. The new one should be 3-5 centimeters larger than the old in diameter. Select a container according to the type of plant. For example, for orchids there are special orchids, they facilitate the irrigation process and do not prevent the penetration of sunlight to the roots of the flower, since in orchids the roots also participate in the process of photosynthesis.

Ampel plants are best planted in hanging flower pots, and large plants need a stable and reliable flowerpot or tub.

Flowerpots are ceramic, glass, plastic - select the material of the flowerpot, taking into account the characteristics of the plant and its location. For example, a photophilous plant located on the sunny side is best not to plant in a plastic container - the plastic heats up quickly. Plants in clay pots should not be placed where they can accidentally tip over.

If you decide to use the pot that was used before - it must be thoroughly cleaned of limescale and the remains of the old substrate.

Selection of substrate for the plant

The stores have a large selection of ready-made mixtures for each type of plant; it is not difficult to choose a substrate specifically designed for your plant. When buying, pay attention to the composition of the substrate, which fertilizers have already been added, what acidity and expiration dates. Choose a substrate from trusted manufacturers.

The finished substrate for plants contains a sufficient amount of nutrients, so fertilizing the plant in the near future is not necessary.

It is better not to use ordinary garden soil for transplanting houseplants - the composition of such soil may not be suitable for your plant. In addition, open ground is often infected with parasites and bacteria, which multiply rapidly at room temperature and can harm your plant.

If it is not possible to purchase a finished substrate, garden soil must be sterilized. To do this, moisten the substrate and steam in the oven for an hour at a temperature of 80-100 degrees.

Transplant process step by step

Prepare everything you need for a transplant - a new flowerpot, substrate, expanded clay.

Carefully remove the plant from the pot. To do this, take the plant at the base, turn it upside down. Of course, this method is not suitable for cacti, but cacti are usually enough transshipment.

Clean the plant roots from the old substrate with your hands or with a wooden stick, being careful not to damage them.

Remove damaged, dry or rotten roots, gently pruning to healthy areas. Process cut points with charcoal. Entangled roots should be untangled or trimmed whenever possible. If earthenm too tightly encircles the roots and cannot be removed - place the plant in a container of water so that the lump is soft.

At the bottom of a new flowerpot, place a drainage layer (expanded clay, gravel) 3-5 cm high.

Place the plant in the center and cover it with a new substrate.

Water the plant.

Remember that a transplant is always stressful for a plant, so it can stop growing for a while.

Plant Transplant Mistakes

You should not take too large a flowerpot with a "reserve" - this can lead to soil leaching, root decay, lack of flowering or stunting.

For some plants, crowding, on the contrary, is beneficial. For example, the hippeastrum will not bloom in a spacious pot, but will let out “children”, and the roots of epiphytic orchids feel better in the usual crowding.

It is a mistake to assume that any soil will fit the plant - each type of plant has its own requirements for the composition and acidity of the substrate.
