Repairing a puncture without removing the scooter wheel
What you will need
If such a trouble happened on the road, it is great if you have the following with you:
- Tubeless tyre repair kit (plugs + rasp + needle).
- Can of sealant or a pump/compressor.
- Pliers.
- Chalk or marker.
The plug method works only for tubeless tyres. On scooters with inner tube tyres, you cannot do without removing the wheel.

Procedure
The procedure for repairing a puncture of a tubeless scooter tyre is as follows:
- Find the puncture. Inflate the tyre and run your hand along the tread – you will feel the escaping air. You can wet the surface with soapy water. The puncture will reveal itself with bubbles. Mark the spot with a marker.
- Remove the foreign object. Nail, screw, shard – pull them out with pliers strictly along the axis, without rocking. The air will start escaping more actively. Don't panic, this is normal.
- Treat the hole with the rasp. Insert the rasp from the repair kit into the puncture and turn it several times. This cleans the edges and creates roughness for better adhesion of the plug.
- Install the plug. Thread it through the needle eye approximately halfway. Apply glue from the kit. Push the needle with the plug into the hole with a sharp motion all the way, then pull out the needle. The plug will remain inside. Cut off the protruding ends, leaving 5-7 mm.
Then you can inflate the wheel. Bring the pressure to normal (usually 1.5-2 atm for a scooter). Wet the repaired area with soapy water again. No bubbles – great, you can ride.
Alternative: sealant can
If you have no plugs but have sealant, this is also one of the tyre repair options that can be used. Screw the nozzle onto the valve, press. The compound fills the puncture from the inside. This method has one significant drawback. The wheel will then need to be properly repaired, and tyre shop masters greet sealant without enthusiasm.
Important nuances
It should be noted that a side cut cannot be fixed with a plug. Only replacement or vulcanisation will help here. Also, a puncture larger than 6 mm is beyond the scope of this method. Only professional repair will help here. After plug repair, do not accelerate above 80 km/h at least until you reach a tyre shop. Remember that this is a temporary repair, not a permanent solution. At the first opportunity, show the wheel to a specialist. Otherwise, a breakdown will occur again on the road, which will be almost impossible to fix in the field.
The entire process, with a repair kit, takes 10-15 minutes right on the roadside. A compact set of plugs costs pennies and fits easily in the storage compartment under the seat. This is one of the best arguments to keep it there permanently. Therefore, take care to have the necessary components for quick wheel repair in the field.
