Plants in the interior of the kitchen

It is no coincidence that the kitchen is called the heart of the home. Not only the housewives, but also the rest of the family spend most of their time in it. Have dinner together, drink a cup of delicious tea, just sit and talk - as a rule, the family gathers in the kitchen. The kitchen is a cozy and homely place.

In kitchen design, as in interior design in general, it is important to take care not only of convenience and functionality, but also of landscaping, since from the point of view of air purity, the kitchen is the most problematic area in the apartment.

Indoor plants in the kitchen not only complement and refresh the interior, bringing harmony to the accumulation of appliances and utensils, but also improve air quality by absorbing toxins and other harmful substances from it. With plants in the kitchen, it’s easier to breathe in the literal sense of the phrase. So to think that the function of plants in the kitchen interior is purely aesthetic is a mistaken opinion.

The choice of plants for the kitchen is influenced by many factors.

Interior

The plant should be combined with the main interior of the kitchen, highlight its features, set the mood, creating a harmonious and comfortable atmosphere.

For example, if the interior of your kitchen is designed in a modern style or in the spirit of minimalism, it makes sense to choose plants with straight and clear shapes - dracaena, fatsia, calathea, zamiakulkas. If the interior is gentle and romantic, in country or Provence style, plants with soft outlines - asplenium, nephrolepis - are more suitable.

Unstable temperature and humidity in the kitchen

When choosing a plant, you should not focus solely on its beautiful appearance. A flowering specimen chosen in a store may turn out to be completely unadapted to conditions of temperature changes, vapors and high humidity.

Do not place plants near the stove, hood, or microwave. Plants are also not placed near the sink - none of them will withstand constant splashes of grease and soapy water. If you place the plant on the top shelf of a kitchen cabinet or on the refrigerator, keep in mind that the air above is always warmer and drier, so the flowers will have to be watered and sprayed more often.

Room area

Chic palm trees and other large plants with a height of 1 m are appropriate in spacious dining rooms. If the kitchen is small, you should not limit the already cramped space with massive flowerpots.

But in studio apartments or apartments with an open plan, using a flowerpot with a beautiful palm tree or a light partition with potted plants, you can creatively and inexpensively zone the space, separating the kitchen from the recreation area.

Lighting

Which side do your kitchen windows face? The choice of plants depends very much on how much light they can receive in a given room. The southwestern, eastern and western sides are considered the most advantageous for plants. There is enough light for the most demanding plants and at the same time it is not too hot. In these conditions, orchids (phalaenopsis, miltonia, encyclia), chlorophytum, various succulents, cacti, crotons, aloe, cyclamen, passionflower, azalea, and Crassulaceae will feel great.

Flowers placed on the north and north-east sides should tolerate shade well. Plants such as dracaena, aglaonema, dieffenbachia, monstera, ficus, schefflera, bamboo, zamiakulkas, syngonium, and sansevieria do without abundant lighting.

Edible plants in the kitchen

It has recently become a fashionable trend to grow spices, herbs, even berries and fruits on the kitchen windowsill. Our grandmothers also grew cheerful green onions on the window, remember? Who doesn’t want to enjoy fresh herbs or vegetables in winter? Pots with herbs look tasty, healthy, and cozy - such as laurel, anise, chervil, mint, lemon balm, borage (borage), which tastes like cucumber, marjoram, basil, dill, parsley.

The fruits of a miniature pomegranate are unlikely to satisfy you, but a tree with small red fruits looks very stylish and unusual.

Decorative citrus trees are also popular - lemon, tangerine, kumquat. Bright, sunny citrus fruits are sure to lift your spirits, especially in winter and autumn - real kitchen optimists!

A coffee tree will also perfectly complement the kitchen style. The dark green oblong leaves look very decorative, and with proper care the tree will delight you with flowering and beautiful red fruits.

Summary

The kitchen is the room in the apartment that needs landscaping more than others, not only for aesthetic reasons. Flowers in the kitchen take care of the cleanliness of the air, and, accordingly, your health. Indoor plants for the kitchen should be unpretentious and hardy, adapt well to unstable conditions and not require complex care.

Properly selected plants will refresh and decorate the interior, emphasize the special individual style of your home, and give an atmosphere of comfort and good mood.
